Testing lightning’s direct effects

The vulnerability of yellow-jacketed CSST to damage from lightning is not a matter of conjecture, but has been demonstrated over and over again in laboratory tests.

In their “Report of Lightning Direct Effects High Current Arc Entry Tests on Corrugated Stainless Steel Tubing (CSST) Samples” from late 2013, Lightning Technologies of Pittsfield, Massachusetts found the product not only ruptured but ignited. They reported that “a 1” diameter CSST was tested which resulted in the CSST splitting in two and ignition of the yellow jacket that was manually extinguished, post-test.”
